Information Trapping: Real-Time Research on the WebInformation Trapping: Real-Time Research on the Web
Julie Smyth : 2007
Quick Facts - Publisher: New Riders
ISBN 10: 0-321-49171-8 | ISBN-13: 978-0-321-49171-8
Cool: Learn to use MultiMedia to trap information.
Uncool: Not a lot.

The author, Tara Calishain, has been writing about information trapping since 1996. Way back then she published her first book "Official Netscape Guide to Internet Research" because she was a huge fan of the internet as a research tool. Today her latest book reflects her years of experience on the web as she goes about explaining how to stop hunting for information and start gathering it using the latest technologies.

How many times have you gone to Google to find something and had to search through literally thousands of search results? Probably a few times I'd imagine. This is a book that will tell you how to use your time more efficiently. Ms Calishain has a very easy-to-read writing style and covers topics you'll be very interested in if you regularly use the internet as a research tool.

Some of the topics covered:

  • Building Queries
  • Who's linking to your site
  • Trapping Topic-Based Information
  • Multimedia Trapping
  • Tracking Tags and Conversations
  • Filtering the Inflow
  • Organizing what you find

We know that most search engines are text-based so you might be wondering about the Multimedia trapping aspect. This chapter explains why you would want to keep up with podcasts, videos and audio and which search engines have made inroads into multimedia searching on the internet. Ms Calishain also dots her personal "tips" all through the book and they are an invaluable part of the purchase price as they offer a personal insight to her expertise. There is also a chapter on Case Studies which kind of brings the whole thing together and offers a big picture example if you've been left behind on any of the smaller points.

The book offers valuable information from an expert, it's easy to read and there are case studies ... all in all, good value for money and earns a thumbs up from me and a little space on my bookshelf.
