Another powerful book from the sitepoint guys. Build your own Database Driven Website Using PHP & MySQL is a self-explanatory title for a tutorial based book. Dynamic websites these days are a given and if you have thought about teaching yourself how to build one then this could be the book for you. Aimed at teaching newbies how to setup and cope with both PHP and MySQL both separately and together, the book does the job exceptionally well, in my opinion.
The author, Kevin Yank, has a great writing style, as the book is easy to read and the illustrations and screenshots are just great. I've read quite a few technical books of late, and some of them have been a little hard to take. Why? Well, mainly because some authors just aren't good teachers but that is not the case with this book. The book is one large tutorial from cover to cover and Kevin Yank is a great teacher who succeeds in what he sets out to do ... teach newbies how to build a database driven website. This book is a terrific starting point in your journey to creating dynamic websites and setting up relational databases.
The Chapter headings read as follows:
| . | Installing PHP & MySQL |
| . | Getting Started with MySQL |
| . | Getting Started with PHP |
| . | Publishing MySQL Data on the Web> |
| . | Relational Database Design |
| . | A Content Management System |
| . | Content Formatting and Submission |
| . | MySQL Administration |
| . | Advanced SQL Queries |
| . | Binary Data |
| . | Cookies and Sessions in PHP |
| . | Structured PHP Programming |
And, as you can see the list is comprehensive and newbies will delight in a whole chapter dedicated to both sourcing and installing PHP & MySQL on their own workstations.
The book gains a definite thumbs up from me and is a welcome addition to my personal reference library.
